CATEDRAL METROPOLITANA (Metropolitan Cathedral)
The exterior of this remarkable building, on the Plaza de Mayo, has a surprising neoclassical façade with twelve neo-classical columns representing the twelve apostles, graced overhead by an 18th century-style dome.
With none of the towers typically found in cathedrals, the building is a surprise, appearing to be more a Greek temple than a catholic church. An exquisite blend of neo-romanesque and baroque interior architectural detailing, incorporating a highly ornate central altar, five naves and the most beautiful Venetian mosaic flooring.
The first chapel on the site was constructed in 1593, however, the existing building was only completed in the mid-19th century. Evidence of this can be seen in the main gilt wood Rococo style altarpiece, one of a few remaining elements reminiscent of past colonial times.
