Fabulous Architectural Styles – Part 3 – as Experienced by David Bell on a recent buying trip through the UK, Belgium and France.
Norman Architecture, City of Caen
David also visited the beautiful city of Caen in Normandy, famous for being the home town and burial place of William the Conqueror.
The French Romanesque-style historical buildings, including the abbey churches of Saint-Etienne (circa 1067) and Sainte-Trinite’ are wonderful examples of innovative Norman architecture. With their austere fortress-like style, impressive tower frontages, enormous semi-circular arches, and massive cylindrical pillars they demand respect.
