David explored this, the oldest Roman Catholic church preserved in Buenos Aires, situated in the heart of the historic quarter of Montserrat. Built between 1686 and 1722, it was declared a National Historic Monument in 1942.
The beautiful clean-lined facade has a Bavarian baroque influence and the original 17th century main altar was carved from wood and later gilded. The building’s exterior is impressive with its two towers and marble-white façade, while the golden grandeur of the interior is equally impressive.
The church sits above of a series of 17th-century underground tunnels that were constructed during colonial times for defence of the city and for smuggling contraband. Overall, it is a testament to centuries of history.
