This fabulous building was constructed according to a design by Franciscan Jesuit architects and opened in 1732.
The Basilica features a simple, whitewashed colonial style exterior, but the fabulous interior is adorned with magnificent original Baroque altarpieces, Inca ornamentation and silver-work from Peru. The ‘Altar of the Lord of Patience and Humility’ is simply breath-taking.
Reaching towards the heavens above the nave is a spectacular multi-arched sail vault of monumental proportions, a masterpiece of construction techniques. One cannot help feeling humbled when experiencing this unbelievably beautiful human endeavour.
